Elizabeth Orum's Work in the
Eighth Year of her Age 1832

Youth should be Industrious
Improvement should be our object
Simple marking sampler with alphaets and mottos.

Elizabeth Orum was eight years old when she completed this sampler, but little else is known about her. The sampler was formerly owned by Hiram Deats, famed collector and philanthropist from Flemington, New Jersey. Deats was born in 1870 and inherited an immense wealth from his grandfather’s invention of the “Deats Plow.” The collection Deats curated was highly respected during his life.
