The Old Barracks Association's Annual Appeal
What have we been up to this year?
As 2020 comes to a close, the Old Barracks Association has been reflecting on how important our supporters truly are. This year has been challenging for everyone, and as COVID-19 spikes throughout the country, financial struggles are on the minds of many. However, it is the assistance of our supporters and friends which has helped the Old Barracks Museum continue to provide virtual historical programming and new online exhibits throughout the year. You are the ones who support us, and without you, we would have no audience with whom to share our amazing history.
The museum originally closed in March due to the pandemic but was open for the summer and fall. However, we have temporarily closed our doors once again as a precautionary measure due to COVID-19. These closures have prevented us from educating visitors and groups during our busiest times of the year; therefore, now more than ever we need your continued support for this important State and National Historic Landmark.
Many people are under the impression we are entirely state funded. While we do receive some financial support from the state, it is by no means guaranteed year to year, and, in the end, it is not enough to operate a National Historic Landmark. We ask you to consider making a monetary, tax-deductible donation towards our Annual Fund, which is a wonderful way to take an active stance for historic preservation in New Jersey.
Your donation will go towards the Old Barracks educational programming and outreach. Students in 2020 can take a virtual field trip with Connecting to the Revolution, a live program where students can continue to meet the past, no matter if their classrooms are in-person, remote, or hybrid.
With your support, we can continue to do some amazing things! Just this past year the Old Barracks has:
• Brought its Annual Fundraiser online with a Virtual Telethon, which featured over 4 hours of original and new video content and raised over $7,000.
• Provided virtual programs on Facebook Live and Zoom to keep people engaged with history despite the pandemic.
• Launched two new online exhibits: “When Women Vote” and “Collection Highlights” both viewable on www.barracks.org.
• Developed a live virtual program called “Connecting to the Revolution” to continue field trips in a safe and still engaging manner.
• Announced “Ask the Barracks” within weeks of the museum’s closure due to COVID-19 in March 2020, which enabled students to email questions about the past and receive responses via video from Historical Interpreters. All video responses are available on YouTube and Facebook.
• Provided socially distant tours of the museum to visitors in the spring and fall.
We thank you for supporting us in the past! You are needed to help us keep the Old Barracks the historic gem that it is. It stands here to remind us of our past and to help us go forward in the future.
We wish you a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year! Huzzah!
Sincerely,
Richard Patterson, Executive Director
John O’Sullivan, President, Board of Trustees
