Sampler
Amy Wills (1787-1877)
1799
Burlington County, New Jersey
Silk thread on linen ground
Gift of Martha Collier
OBA 1979.008.0001

Teach me Lord to tred thy sacred ways,
And to thy service consecrate my days,
Conduct the steps of my unguarded youth
And point their motions to the paths of truth
Protect me by they providential care,
And teach me to avoid the tempter's snare.
Amy Wills's work wrought in the thirteenth year of her age 1799

This typical verse sampler is worked in simple black crossstich with a green border with a decorative stem stich used to separate the verse from the information about the maker.

Amy Wills was the second of nine children. Her parents, Zedebee Wills and Pricilla Moore were Quakers who lived in Evesham, New Jersey. Amy never married and passed away at the age of 90.
