Ye Olde Barracks Tavern

February 20th, 2010; 5:30PM to closing

The Old Barracks Museum announces the 20th Annual Capital Ball to be held on Saturday, February 20th, 2010. The Museum will be transformed for the night into Ye Olde Barracks Tavern, an authentic 18th Century establishment.

Program Highlights

Mustering with Mister Bayley

The fun begins at 5:30, as visitors are welcomed by the Old Barracks’ Fife and Drum Corps, and escorted into the Officer’s House wing.  Visitors will enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres, try their hand at parlor games such as Whist and Nine Men’s Morris, while being entertained by strolling musicians playing colonial tunes.

A major addition to this year’s event will be the arrival of Mr. Bayley.  Clad in knee breeches, red waistcoat and a tricorn hat, Robert Olson will reincarnate "Mr. Bayley,” an actual 18th century magician, who advertised in New York in 1767 that he performed feats of magic, "without the use of Pockets, Bags, or Sleeves." Mr. Bayley has performed for over 30 years at such places as Old Sturbridge Village, Mystic Seaport, Mt. Vernon and Fraunce’s Tavern.

Visitors can also stroll though the Barracks’ marvelous new gallery exhibit, “All Is Threatened and Endangered: New Jersey and the French & Indian War” an exciting and often gruesome look at the French and Indian War.  On display will be two of the Barracks’ most recent major acquisitions: one of the oldest battle flags in North America, and a powder horn carried into battle by the “Jersey Blues.”

The Main Event by Marsilio’s

At 7:00, the entire company will assemble in the Old Barracks’ Long Room for an authentic colonial feast.  Thirteen toasts will be given in honor of the original thirteen colonies.  And then, to the table!  Marsilio’s of Trenton will create an authentic colonial meal just for the occasion, including hearty winter entrees, root vegetables, breads and pastries, and fruit pies.  All served in an informal family style.  Libations will include wine selections by Crossings Vineyard, and ales by River Horse Brewery.

Making Merry

Following dinner, tables will be pushed back, and the real fun begins!  The Old Barracks interpreters will lead the company dancing to the flute and the fiddle, under the direction of a dance master. The less adventurous can enjoy other games and amusements, some quite conversation in the side rooms, or a cigar on the Barracks’ massive wraparound porch.
